Your surgeon has recommended intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) to help protect your brain, spinal cord or nerves during surgery. This page explains what that means for you.
During your operation, a Synergy Neurotrace technologist continuously records signals from your nervous system and alerts your surgeon to any significant change, so they can act straight away.
Frequently asked questions
What is intraoperative neuromonitoring?
IONM uses small electrical signals to check, continuously and in real time, that the brain, spinal cord and nerves are working normally while you are under anaesthesia. It helps your surgeon avoid injury to these structures.
Will I feel anything?
No. Electrodes are placed after you are asleep and removed before you wake up. Some people notice small marks where electrodes were placed; these fade within days.
Is it safe?
IONM is a well-established, low-risk technique used worldwide in spine, brain and nerve surgery. Your monitoring team will discuss any specific considerations with you and your anaesthetist.
Who decides whether I need IONM?
Your surgeon recommends monitoring based on the type of surgery and the structures at risk. Please ask your surgeon if you have any questions about your own procedure.
Who performs the monitoring?
A trained IONM technologist from Synergy Neurotrace is present in the operating theatre throughout the procedure and communicates directly with the surgical team.
